1. Common Core Standards CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.1.2- Retell stories, including key details, and demonstrate understanding of their central message or lesson.
2. Student Learning Objectives (see Blooms Taxonomy):
Students will decide what pet the characters choose at the end of the story and defend why their choice is the one the characters should make.
Students will understand the possible steps involved in decision making and complete these steps with a partner.
Add below objectives the following information:
a) Explain how this lesson supports previous and subsequent learning.
Students know how to retell a story including key details
Students are able to identify key details in a story, such as having to make a decision in the story What Pet Should I Get?
Students have been working on how to determine the central message/lesson of a story
3. Assessment
Students will turn in paper written up with partner about decision making to teacher.
Students will work at their seats for the initiation and then on chrome books with a partner at their seats. Students will work with the person next to them and have one chrome book to work on per pair.
6. Lesson Plan
a. Initiation
Students will briefly introduce what it means to make a decision and explain that we make them every day. Some are easy such as deciding what to wear in the morning, and some decisions are harder choosing an after school activity or stepping in when someone is being bullied.
Students will begin by taking part of a decision making activity using plickers
Teacher will remind students of the story What Pet Should I Get?
Teacher will follow by asking students what pet they think the children in the story picked
students will be given options such as dog, cat, rabbit, fish, other
students will hold up their response to be collected by the plicker app and if they chose 'other' they will be given a chance to share what they think the children decided on
b. Sequence of Learning Activities/questions/transitions
Students will watch the created screencast-o-matic explaining details on what to do on the kids health website.
Students will read through the webpage with a partner.
As mentioned in the video, students will write about decision making situations, steps to follow, and the decisions that they can make with a partner.
c. Closure
Students will share situations in which they have to make decisions that they discussed and wrote down with their partner.
During the first and third lesson, students will be working with partners to complete their work. I chose to evaluate them with this rubric based on how they work together.
